What happens if you have air in your coolant system?

If there isn't enough fluid in the tank, air is pushed into the cooling system instead of coolant. Some systems can trap air at high points in the system. They often have a bleeder valve to release the trapped air. Trapped air can cause hot spots in the engine, even if the coolant level doesn't appear to be low.
