Putting isopropyl (rubbing) alcohol on a child's skin is a popular folk remedy for quickly reducing a fever. Although the alcohol may temporarily cool the skin as it evaporates, using it is dangerous. The fact that it works so quickly is part of the problem. (Don't give aspirin to children unless a doctor advises it.
